My husband was on the last Aquila Airway flight INTO Madeira. There was a terrible storm (people still remember it--he was quite young and it was in the '50's) and the plane broke up on the rocks (technical: wing-tip float sprang a leak, "winged" [tipped] over into the water, broke its moorings and was found in pieces on the seawall in the morning). Pictures can be provided!
A few days later a second Sunderland (the flying boats) caught a wingtip on a wave and crashed on take-off in Southhampton. Aquila had three planes (lost two w/in a week or so) and went bankrupt shortly thereafter.
One of the few (only?) remaining ones is at the air museum (Western Aerospace Museum) in Oakland, CA. They didn't believe my husband had really been on one. . .
